Esoteric Electric Vibe Radio & Records Unveils Three Singles Bridging Jazz-Funk, Afro House and Dance Music

The Jasztronomical DJ JASZ draws on James Brown’s footwork, African musical textures and the complications of love for a fall release series.

Esoteric Electric Vibe Radio & Records is introducing a three-single release series by The Jasztronomical DJ JASZ, the performing name of DJ, composer and producer Junius Simon. “Camel Walk,” released October 16, leads the series, followed by “Serengeti Sunrise” on November 3 and “Free Yourself” on November 13. Each track approaches the dance floor from a different direction, with funk, African-inspired instrumentation and house music at the center.

“Camel Walk” (jazz-funk) began with a vintage performance by James Brown. Simon watched footage of Brown’s 1960s camel walk dance, turned down the sound and imagined the choreography set to his own music. The result is a track built around the relationship between rhythm and movement.

“Serengeti Sunrise” (Afro House), due November 3, explores African instrumentation and tonal colors in a contemporary house setting. “Free Yourself” (house), arriving November 13, turns to a different subject: love that has gone wrong or is beginning to unravel, carried by an energetic, pulsing production.

Simon composes, produces and masters all three releases himself. His work draws on years spent moving between funk, jazz, R&B and club music, including his time as a DJ in Washington, D.C., and as a mix-show DJ on WPGC 95.5. The new recordings extend his interest in returning funk to the jazz conversation while making music for current listeners.

“We create music that we hope our listeners can ‘feel’!” Simon said.

The label describes its mission as building a creative community that connects listeners across generations and musical genres. The three singles offer an early look at that direction without asking audiences to settle into one sound.
